Ode to our Matrics of '23 - The Final Countdown

Ode to our Matrics of '23 - The Final Countdown

by Hannah Malan

As the Matrics are approaching the final countdown of their high school years, they are grabbing the bull by the horns by taking every opportunity that comes their way. A group of friends created a netball team on the first of August to play Interschools on the fourth of August. Most of the team had not played netball since primary school and joined the team for the fun of it. They asked one of their friends, who unfortunately cannot play netball anymore, to coach their last-minute team. Zemke Lombard coached one practice before the team was ready to play. The team played with enthusiasm and passion a week after they were formed. They achieved a surprisingly near loss against the Paarl Gymnasium u.19D team. There are many Matrics who partook in both netball and hockey this year to experience the full Interschools feeling for the last time. The countdown on their final year of high school keeps ticking yet they are filling the remaining moments with memories that will last them a lifetime. The Matrics of 2023 know how to make the best of Interschools.

Ja, skaak is ‘n sport.

Interview with Kyla Dames, the first team netball captain:

Interview with Kyla Dames, the first team netball captain:  by Karla Joubert Some describe her as the best player they have seen in a long time. Others say she plays effortlessly and it is as if she simply plucks the ball out of the air. Where others rush she simply moves with time distributing the ball to all her teammates. She is of course Kyla Dames.  We asked Kyla some questions that we are sure our readers are burning to know, as well as offering some of her advice and expectations for what lies ahead regarding the upcoming interschools game.  Karla : What role do you play as captain? Kyla : I don't feel as if I play a specific role. I rather offer support to my team and try to bring out the best in them.  Karla : What makes netball such a special sport to you ? Kyla : Netball is very special. The sport itself is really amazing and a good netball game is definitely one of the best games to watch. Netbal allowed me to meet so many people and form some of m...

Dik Vibe

Dik vibe  by Isabella Groenewald During Big Brag, a new teacher at our school, Ms Fouché, was put on the spot and asked to describe Interschools. Her answer summed up Interschools in two words and left the crowd cheering: Dik vibe. The first layer of the Interschools vibe takes place amongst school learners. You paint people’s faces you’ve barely held a conversation with. You borrow hair ties and ribbons from random people so one of the unofficial, underpaid Girls’ High stylists can braid your hair. You cheer unfamiliar names next to the sports field, regardless of if you know them or not, because they are part of your school. The dik Interschools vibe creates a form of nationalist pride in your school and reinforces the existing sisterhood we have in Girls’ High.  The second layer of Interschools vibe is the town of Paarl. During Interschools week, you have to colour coordinate your outfits to the school you support. You decorate your house in the school's colours, and...
