Interview with Kyla Dames, the first team netball captain:

by Karla Joubert

Some describe her as the best player they have seen in a long time. Others say she plays effortlessly and it is as if she simply plucks the ball out of the air. Where others rush she simply moves with time distributing the ball to all her teammates. She is of course Kyla Dames.

We asked Kyla some questions that we are sure our readers are burning to know, as well as offering some of her advice and expectations for what lies ahead regarding the upcoming interschools game.

Karla: What role do you play as captain?

Kyla: I don't feel as if I play a specific role. I rather offer support to my team and try to bring out the best in them.

Karla: What makes netball such a special sport to you ?

Kyla: Netball is very special. The sport itself is really amazing and a good netball game is definitely one of the best games to watch. Netbal allowed me to meet so many people and form some of my closest friendships.

Karla: What can people learn from this sport?

Kyla: Definitely teamwork. Netbal teaches you to work as a unit.

Karla : What is your goal for the first team in this upcoming game ?

Kyla: I think our biggest goal is to play the best netball possible .

Karla : What advice can you give to aspiring sports women?

Kyla: My best advice is to just never give up. Keep working hard because you will reach your goals.

Karla: What are you most excited about regarding interschools?

Kyla: Definitely the interschools adrenaline. I am excited to play in front of everyone and to represent my school.

Karla: How do spectators influence the game ?

Kyla: You are only influenced by the spectators if you allow it. The spectators definitely play a role, but they don't have to influence how you play. In my case, I block everything out.

Karla: Have you got any idea what Girls’ High is up against this year?

Kyla: We have played a couple games against Gim this year, they are a strong team.

Karla: How do you think the score is going to look ?

Kyla: I think its going to be a very close game. The score will probably differ by 2-3 points.

Karla: And finally, who do you believe will walk away winners?

Kyla: Girls High of course!

Yes, Kayla the entire Girls’ High is also rooting for that outcome to the game on Friday.

Ja, skaak is ‘n sport.

Dik Vibe

Dik vibe  by Isabella Groenewald During Big Brag, a new teacher at our school, Ms Fouché, was put on the spot and asked to describe Interschools. Her answer summed up Interschools in two words and left the crowd cheering: Dik vibe. The first layer of the Interschools vibe takes place amongst school learners. You paint people’s faces you’ve barely held a conversation with. You borrow hair ties and ribbons from random people so one of the unofficial, underpaid Girls’ High stylists can braid your hair. You cheer unfamiliar names next to the sports field, regardless of if you know them or not, because they are part of your school. The dik Interschools vibe creates a form of nationalist pride in your school and reinforces the existing sisterhood we have in Girls’ High.  The second layer of Interschools vibe is the town of Paarl. During Interschools week, you have to colour coordinate your outfits to the school you support. You decorate your house in the school's colours, and...
